Before the ceremony

What do I need if I want to get married again?

If you’re looking to get married again, there are a few essential requirements you’ll need. Thankfully, it’s not too difficult.

The main thing you’ll need is proof that your previous marriage has ended - usually your Divorce Order.

If you’ve been married twice, you’ll just need proof that your most recent marriage has ended.

If you’ve been married seven times, then it might be time to consider something else.

Getting your Divorce Order is relatively simple. And depending on when your divorce was finalised, you may even be able to download it for free.

How do I get my Divorce Order?

If your divorce was finalised after 13 February 2010, you can generally download your official Divorce Order for free through the Commonwealth Courts Portal. It’s a digital document with an electronic seal and signature, and it’s the official proof of your divorce.

If your divorce was finalised before 13 February 2010, there’s a different process, and you may need to apply to the Court and pay a fee.

If you’re not sure how to find your Divorce Order, don’t stress - I can point you in the right direction.

What if my partner has also been married before?

If your partner has previously been married, they’ll also need to provide proof that their previous marriage has ended.

You’ll then provide this to your celebrant, who will record the relevant details on your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM).

Specifically, your celebrant will need details about where the previous marriage was dissolved and the date it was dissolved.

You don’t need to worry too much about the NOIM just yet. I’ll help you with that.

For the NOIM, you’ll also need evidence of your date and place of birth, such as a birth certificate or passport, as well as evidence of your identity, such as a driver’s licence or passport. Your celebrant will guide you through exactly what you need.

And that’s pretty much it! There’s a little bit more to the process, but thankfully, it’s not particularly complicated.

So, if you’re thinking about getting married for a second, third or even seventh time, feel free to get in touch and I’ll help you work out what you need.
